How We Score Destinations

👥 Crowd Pressure (1–10)

Reflects actual in-person crowd density at attractions, beaches, and transport hubs. A 1 means you'll have places to yourself; a 10 means shoulder-to-shoulder queues and sold-out hotels months ahead.

💰 Budget Pressure (1–10)

Reflects realistic daily spend for a mid-range traveler including accommodation, meals, and activities. A 1 means low-cost living; a 10 means premium prices with limited budget options.

📈 Trend Direction

Rising = growing fast, prices increasing. Stable = steady demand and pricing. Cooling = easing crowds or softening prices — often a window of opportunity.

📋 Annual Arrivals

International tourist arrivals in millions per year (pre-pandemic baseline adjusted for 2025–26 recovery trends). Used to contextualize crowd and pricing scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Tourism Demand Index is a free DreamVacati tool that scores 30 global destinations on crowd pressure (1–10) and budget pressure (1–10). Each destination is tagged with a trend direction (rising, stable, or cooling) and annual international arrivals. The goal is to help travelers identify where to go before crowds or prices peak.

The crowd pressure score (1–10) reflects actual in-person density at attractions, beaches, and transport hubs. A score of 1 means you'll have major sites largely to yourself; a 10 means shoulder-to-shoulder queues, sold-out hotels months in advance, and significant premium pricing. Scores reflect mid-range traveler conditions during typical travel months.

Filter the index by "Low Tourism" and sort by "Least Crowded First" to find destinations with crowd pressure scores of 1–3. Typically these include Eastern European capitals, select Central American destinations, and parts of Southeast Asia that haven't yet hit peak mass tourism. Destinations tagged "Cooling" are also worth checking — they may have recently eased from higher crowd levels.

The TDI scores reflect baseline tourism demand — not event-specific surges. World Cup 2026 host cities like Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Miami will see significant crowd and price spikes above their TDI baseline during match weeks in June–July 2026. For host-city-specific demand and budget estimates, see the World Cup 2026 Travel Guide, the city-by-city budget breakdown, or use the trip cost calculator.

The index is reviewed quarterly and updated when significant demand shifts occur — typically following peak travel seasons, major events, or published international tourism data. Trend labels (rising, stable, cooling) are based on 12–18 month direction changes and are updated as new arrival and pricing data becomes available.
